Ethnographic Documentary Production
Olivia Plato is a Visual Anthropologist, documentary film-maker and photographer. Her work is an extension of her life and academic career - inspired by encounters with people and places, their motivations for living and being in the world.
"I have always travelled and enjoyed exploring new cultures through the individuals I meet along the way. The knowledge I have gained and experiences I have shared with others have influenced my own life and dreams. Through film I record and share these experiences and contribute to shaping new ways of viewing the world we live in and the people who inhabit it."
Olivia graduated in Latin American Studies from the University of Liverpool in 2010. Her undergraduate thesis explored the role of community film schools in Rio de Janeiro in constructing a collective social conscience in marginalised sectors of Brazilian society.
She has spent several years living, working and developing projects in Colombia. These include visual media projects with Afro Colombian, LGBTI and rural communities throughout the country.
In 2015 Olivia graduated from the the University of Manchester with a Masters in Visual Anthropology.
Since graduating, as well as producing her own ethnographic work, Olivia has collaborated with several institutions and international organisations that work to campaign for environmental and human rights issues such as: Justice for Colombia, PASO International, Unite, Unison, Fundación Planeta Azul Caribe (FUPAC), the University of Cartagena and Manchester Metropolitan University.
Olivia is currently based in Bristol where she works as a freelance videographer and documentary maker.
